Update (11/05/2020): Read The 1Z0-819 Exam page to learn how you can easily our Java 11 Study Guides to prepare for Oracle’s 1Z0-819 Exam, as well as the 1Z0-817 Upgrade Exam.
Oracle has announced a new Java SE 11 Developer 1Z0-819 exam. In doing so, they are also retiring the 1Z0-815 and 1Z0-816 exams, effective October 1st, 2020. Don’t panic! The new exam is basically a combined version of the 1Z0-815 and 1Z0-816 exams.
In fact, Jeanne and I worked with Oracle staff to help design the objective set for the new 1Z0-819 exam. For example, we’re responsible for removing CallableStatement
‘s and assertions. You’re welcome!
This means our existing study guides are perfectly suited to help you pass this new exam. We recommend studying for the new exam with one of the following two options:
- Java OCP 11 Programmer I Study Guide + Java OCP 11 Programmer II Study Guide
- Java OCP 11 Developer Complete Study Guide
Is the new exam easier?
Not really. The new 1Z0-819 exam covers a broad range of material. And you have to know it all on the same day instead of split across two different exams.
What are the benefits of the new 1Z0-819 exam?
To begin with, it costs less. One exam instead of two. Additionally, there are less questions.
The breadth of material does have an advantage: if you don’t do well on one topic, it is likely to be less points on the exam. That said, you only have 90 minutes on the new exam, as opposed to 180 minutes on the old exams, but you have less questions to answer.
What about the Upgrade Exam?
Oracle is keeping the Upgrade OCP Java 11 1Z0-817 exam. Like the new 1Z0-819 exam, our Complete Study Guide can be used for the upgrade exam. You also just use the Programmer II book, as we added an Upgrade Appendix just for this exam.
What don’t I need to study?
You need to know almost everything that was on the 1Z0-815 and 1Z0-816 exams for the 1Z0-819 exam. There are a few topics that you no longer need to worry about for the exam:
- Characteristics of Java (platform independence, backwards compatibility, etc)
- Running a basic program from the command line (except modules)
- Java Assertions
- JDBC CallableStatement
How do the new objectives map to our Java 11 Study guides?
We created a helpful mapping so you know what to study for the new exam.

if i already did the 1z0 815, will i have to do the 1z0 819 or will they keep the 1z0 816?
It depends on your timing. The 1Z0-816 will be around through October 1st.
Thanks, Jeanne for the detailed explanation. I was about to appear in the 1Z0-815. I really liked the idea of a single exam instead of 2 different exams. Appreciate your detailed blog and study guides. Thank you is a small word for such great help.
When did they announce that? I did the 1Z0-815 exam last week!! ๐
A transitional phase with still both the possibilities would have been nice…
Dear Jeanne Boyarsky,
Could you please help to understand the certification path.
If I have passed 1Z0-808, can I go directly to 1Z0-819? (after 1st of October)
Thank you in advance!
@Balazs – correct. Anyone can take the 1Z0-819, no pre-req needed. Technically, it’s after 9/21. That’s when PearsonVUE is making appointments.
@Illenia: They announced it yesterday. And yes more transition would have been nice.
I just finished 1Z0-815 exam this morning. Which exam i should be do next 1Z0-816 or 1Z0-819??
I recommend taking the 1Z0-819.
I passed the oca 8 and bought the ocp book 11 but I haven’t studied all the module yet. Can I take the new one?
An outstanding explanation with awesome clarification focusing on the Java SE 11 Developer 1Z0-819 exam. Thank you Jeanne! I have two quick questions if you allow me. Q 1. Is there any new book on Java SE 11 Developer 1Z0-819? Or, the books: “Java OCP 11 Programmer I Study Guide” and “Java OCP 11 Programmer II Study Guide” are covering everything on this new test? Q 2. Can I straight take the Java SE 11 Developer 1Z0-819 exam? Or, are there any official steps or requirements that must be fulfilled before taking this exam? I would appreciate your response.
Hi , i am new to java certification,
is it possible for me to take “ocp java 11 developer exam 1z0-819 ” without taking any of the previous java 8 or 7 certification…?
Thanks in advance.
Dear Jeanne Boyarsky,
I finished the 1Z0-815 and, acording with your latest answer, you recommend taking the 1Z0-819.
Can you tell me if I will have to answer questions from the 1Z0-815 in the 1Z0-819 too? If not, will I get less questions? Thank you.
Regards!
@Fabio: modules are a significant part of the exam. You should absolutely study them before the exam.
@azduz:
1) Yes! Our book for the 815/816 is now for the 819 :). Aside from a handful of dropped topics, everything is the same content wise.
2) Yes, you take the 819. No pre-reqs.
@sai: The 819 does not have any pre-reqs. You can definitely take it.
@Nahuel: Yes, you will have to answer some questions on 815 content on the 819. That’s easier than answering all questions on the former 816 content though!
I have 1Z0-816 exam scheduled on 1.October 2020
Is it still valid?
Hi Jeanne, which chapters or topics are not included in the complete study guide?
@Tatiana: That’s a question for Oracle. I don’t know if 10/1 means that is the last da the exam is offered or the first day it is not.
The Complete Study Guide is the two books together. We did change the back/forward references so they make sense. And the 817 upgrade exam appendix isn’t there. Instead we point you to the chapters that cover that material. (The 817 appendix was reprinted content from the 815 book so people with the 816 book would have it.) Since both books are in the complete study guide, that was duplication!
Hi Jeanne,
Thank you for your explanation on 1Z0-819. I have not taken any exam before, I am preparing for 819 and doing practice coding as much as I can. I wanted to know how much time does it take to prepare for this exam and studying this Complete Guide along with practice coding would be sufficient to crack it?
Thanks.
Thank you Jeanne for taking your time to reply. I greatly appreciate it. Have a wonderful day ๐
@Shweta: Yes, the Complete Guide and coding is enough. How much time to study varies by person.
I bought voucher for Java SE 11 Programmer I 1Z0-815 and book for this.
I don’t want to pass exam before 1/10.2020. What should I do now?
My book is not good for new exam? Do I have to learn more to do the fist certification step? And I don’t need to do two part certifications anymore?
@Mical: That’s a good question. You’ll have to ask whomever you bough the voucher from whether it is transferable. (I’ve always paid for the exam directly at PearsonVUE so I’m not familiar with how exam vouchers work)
Hello Jeanne and Scott,
Can you comment what happen with exam? The link is broken at least for three days.
https://education.oracle.com/java-se-11-developer/pexam_1Z0-819
@Kirill: We let Oracle know. They are working on it. Rest assured that the exam still exists :).
Thank you Jeanne, the link for exam is valid again.
Thank you Jeanne! I had access to the Java Learning Subscription and I can easily say that I feel more confident studying by the Complete Study Guide rather than the video lessons. I’m going to take the 819 exam as soon as I finish reviewing all the topics ๐
Oracle needs to update this page: https://education.oracle.com/oracle-certified-professional-java-se-11-developer/trackp_815 with still has the 1Z0-815/816 exams as the certification path for Java 11 – no mention of those exams being retired Oct 1 and no mention of a new 1Z0-819 exam.
Updated table for minor objective re-org
@jeanne Is it sufficient if I prepare using “OCP Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 11 Developer Complete Study Guide: Exam 1Z0-815, Exam 1Z0-816, and Exam 1Z0-817 ” for 1z0-819 exam? Or should I prepare using 1z0-815 and 1z0-816 books as well?
Hi Jeanne,
I can see that for 1Z0-819 – Oracle still says passing the below examination is required-
Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 11 Developer.
(Link- https://education.oracle.com/java-se-11-developer/pexam_1Z0-819)
I have not done any previous certification test for java. Can I directly give this 1Z0-819 exam ?
Thanks
@Meghraj: yes, you can take the 819 directly.
@Arthi: The Complete Study Guide is the content of the 815 and 816 books combined. Which one you choose only depends on whether you want two smaller books or one thick book. The content is the same.
Hi Jeanne,
I passed 808.
now, I am reading 816 book. Today I read this topic then I should buy 815 book also and skip some topics. I am afraid of skipping some topics by mistake.
Can we expect to have a single book for 819 then? to cover all the topics that are needed.
That on is really reallly appreciated.
Regarding to my previous question, if it is not possible to have a single topic-updated book, can you please update the content of exclided topics with more detail, like chapter name, topic… I mean something like :
JDBC: Calling a callableStatement
Exception, Assertion and licalization: Declaring assertions …
Then we know exactly which pages are excluded.
Thanks in advance.
With the New Exam Objectives covering content from both books for example:
Programmer I (1Z0-815) Programmer II (1Z0-
816)
Exception Handling: 10 โ Exceptions 5 โ Exceptions,
Assertions, and
Localization
Should we study chapters consecutively based off objective or go straight through Programmer 1 and then programmer 2?
Hi Jeanne, thanks for the post. I recently purchased the 816 and 815 books, and have just learned about the exam changes.
I wanted to ask, do you think the best way to tackle the books now the exam has been reworked is to still read/study one book and then the other, or do you think it would be smarter to go through the topics outlined in the objectives mapped in this article, even if it requires going between the two books for certain objectives?
Interested to hear your thoughts, thanks!
Hi Jeanne,
Thanks for the mapping between the book and the updated objectives. I literally saw the announcement about 819 less than an hour after buying the combined book, so it’s good to know I can still use it for the new exam.
I pass 815 exam in previous year and study for pass 816 exam in end of this year.
And now I fill myself bettered. I spend time and money for pass 815 exam and now it not relevant anymore.
The time pays off if you take the 819. The money I agree is frustrating!
@Dan: I would say go in order of the books (except skip the few things that are now out of scope like assertions). you have to know pretty much the same material by the time you take the 819 and the books are organized for readability/understanding/retention.
@Hasib: I would say go in order of the books (except skip the few things that are now out of scope like assertions). you have to know pretty much the same material by the time you take the 819 and the books are organized for readability/understanding/retention.
@Mahdi: There’s very little you can skip. As you see we only have four topics in the bulleted lists in the post for what to skip.
Hi Jeanne,
Thanks for this blog. So I just saw that the Java 819 exam is live. It has total of 50 questions and we need 68% to succeed.
Do we know how the questions will be distributed between the 819 exam.
Also is there any practice test for 819 where I can test my skills before the big day.
Thanks in advance.
@Ravi: I’m taking the 819 a week from today. As far as practice, the material is roughly the same as the 815/816 so practice tests for those will be good.
The SE8 exams are not planned for retirement, right?
Thanks Jeanne, we will be eagerly waiting for your take on the exam.
Good luck ?
